About Us

BCNU is one of the most successful nursing organizations in North America

A brief history of our success

Our members

The BC Nurses’ Union was founded in 1981 and represents about 32,000 nurses and allied health care employees.

Our membership consists of Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Registered Psychiatric Nurses, Licensed Graduate Nurses, Employed Student Nurses, healthcare support staff and student nurses.

Our contracts

BCNU negotiates some of the best collective agreements in healthcare. Our members enjoy strong salaries, benefits and pensions as part of their professional compensation.

We have never taken contract rollbacks for nurses employed under the terms of the Provincial Collective Agreement.

Our activities

BCNU provides excellent member services and professional workplace representation. We are committed to supporting the development of our members through education and by resolving professional practice issues in their workplaces.

We strongly advocate for improved public healthcare, and we are committed to advancing social justice to produce better health outcomes and build a better world.

Our structure

BCNU is governed by its constitution and bylaws. When in session, our annual convention is the highest governing body of the union. Between conventions, BCNU is governed by its elected Council and Executive Committee.

BCNU’s president, vice-president and executive committee are elected by a direct vote of BCNU’s membership. This allows each member to participate in selecting their union’s top leadership.
